The Band of 14AOD

This is a curiousity that may interest some readers of this blog. During WWII, my father played in an army dance band. (This was in addition to - not instead of - his regular army duties.) A number of 78 rpm records of the band survive. I don't have recording dates, but they must have been made between 1944 and 1946. You can download them from here:

(Link updated 20/05/2015)
For a history of the band, including more details of the records, see my blog http://bandof14aod.blogspot.com/

B.B. King, 30 June 1996

Royal Albert Hall, London
30 June 1996

Support act -Big Joe Turner's Memphis Blues Caravan

Only 19 minutes. This was still back in the days when I tried to fit everything on one tape. To preserve as much as possibe of the B.B. King session, I flipped the tape and overwrote some of the BJT stuff.

The history of the blues has seen more than one "Big Joe Turner". This one was a bass player who had worked with B.B. King amongst others. Sadly he is no longer with us. For more information see: http://www.joeturnerblues.com/history.htm

I don't have the complete line-up, but from contemporary accounts I have found, I think the vocalist must be Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges

01 I'm Leaving on that Midnight Train(?) (incomplete)
02 No Response
03 My Take-Home Pay Just Won't Take Me Home

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, March 1996

Two concerts from the same tour "A Woman's Life". You get more bang for your bucks with the Croydon concert. Theodossi Spassov was missing from the Festival Hall performance. And the earlier show has only one encore. After that, the audience seemed to give up too easily and started leaving in droves without waiting to see if they would get any more. (The house lights were still down, which is usually a good indication that the performers can be coaxed back on stage.)

Both performances are complete, although you will notice the applause around the encores is cut off quite sharply. I hit the pause button while the audience was clapping to conserve tape.
